70 Generations

From the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE to today is about 1,956 years. A generation, from a parent to their child, is about 28 years. So about seventy generations of parents and children connect Judea to you.

How we counted

1,956 years ÷ 28 years per generation ≈ 70. It is an estimate: 25-year generations would make it about 78, 30-year ones about 65. One of our own family lines, traced in the records, averages about 30 years. Back to Abraham is about 136 generations.

How this was built

This began as a passion project. Family trees are usually charts of names, dates and boxes. The goal here was to bring the story alive instead: a journey you can fly through, with the places, the times, the music and the faces. It is also meant as a keepsake, a family heirloom: new records, photos and stories can easily be added as our families find them. And the same ideas and techniques could tell other families’ stories, or be used for other kinds of products.

My own goal was to explore what today’s AI tools can do with music, film, research and design. At work I use AI every day, but for engineering software.

What it’s made with: Claude (Claude Code) wrote and tested the site with me, and on the family version Claude answers questions. The facts come from family research in the records (birth and marriage records, ship lists, newspapers, gravestones) and a DNA test, each labelled with how sure we are. The globe is built with three.js, using satellite pictures (Sentinel-2) and height maps; the old photos are from Wikimedia Commons. The songs were made with Suno, and the films with Seedance, starting from still pictures. The site is hosted on Cloudflare.

But everyone asks how it all started. So the journey begins earlier, with Abraham walking from Ur to Canaan, about 3,800 years ago. That part is the story the Torah tells. History, archaeology and DNA take over later, and the map always shows which is which.

How we counted the generations

From 70 CE to 2026 is 1,956 years. Divided by 28 years per generation, that is about 70. It is an estimate: 25-year generations give about 78, 30-year generations about 65. One of our best-documented lines averages about 30 years per generation, close to the 28 we assume.
